Aquitaine France
Aquitaine.
This region geographically sits at the extreme south west of France and comprises the 5 departments of Dordogne (24), Lot et Garonne (47), Pyrenees Atlantiques (64) , Landes (40) and Gironde (33).The land area is a total of just over 41,300km2 with a population density of approx 76 inhabitants per sq km.
Aquitaine has a very interesting history having been conquered by the Gauls and the Romans, it has had links with the Iberian peninsula, and also a possession of England between 1154 until 1453 when at the end of the Hundred Years War, it reverted back to French rule.
The topography of the region starts at the most southerly point from the frontier with Spain with the Pyrenees mountain range and several very popular ski resorts. The coastal strip featuring long sandy beaches (very popular tourist area in the summer months) from the southern most tip with the border with Spain to the northern coastal resorts of the region. There are several major surfing championships that take place off this coastal stretch.
From the reasonably flat coastal strip with it long rolling sandy beaches and dunes backed by pine forests, inland you will find neat vineyard-covered hills, prevalent between Bordeaux (the capital of the region) and Bergerac. Further north and into the Perigord there are dense afforested areas (notably famed for the truffles), rivers, ravines and caves many of which are testimony to early prehistoric man in this area.
Primarily, the ecomony of Aquitaine is agricultural with a substantial maize production and also producing fine wines and foodstuffs - oysters, seafoods, foie gras and confits de canard, truffles, mushrooms and of course the famous Basque peppers. Some of the world's most famous wines are produced in Bergerac, Bordeaux and not forgetting Cognac of course!
Climatic temperatures are not dissimilar to the French Mediterranean coast, it is sunny for much of the year, but a little cooler with average temperatures ranging from around 8 degrees in January to 28 C in August, although summer temperatures of up to 40 C have been recorded in the last few years, with intermittent heavy storms that in general clear quickly.
The region is easily accessibility from Spain, Portugal, UK and the northern European countries, with excellent road ( a 5 hour drive from the northerly port of St Malo - Brittany- ) and auroroute connections. Rail connections with the high speed TGV train and the increasing number of cheap flights to towns such as Bordeaux, Bergerac , Pau and even Tarbes (Lourdes) airport (in neighbouring Hautes Pyrenees) all add to the desirability of the region.
